Sonoma Day Trips from Los Altos

A day trip to Sonoma from Los Altos is a popular option for many living and visiting the small city. While the two cities are 80 miles apart, the hour-and-40 minute drive is as worthwhile one. Sonoma is part of Northern California’s world-famous wine country, and as such, it draws visitors from all over. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or with the entire family, this world-class wine city will not disappoint.

There are many things to enjoy in the city of Sonoma. If you enjoy learning about and experiencing the history of an area, you will be interested to know that not only is Sonoma the site of a Spanish mission, but in 1846 Sonoma was the very short-lived capital of the California Republic, which lasted only 26 days. Part of this history can be seen in the center of town at the Sonoma Plaza. The National Historic Landmark is eight acres, filled with shady trees and bordered by original adobe buildings, including the Mission San Francisco Solano at 114 East Spain Street and the Bear Flag Monument in the northeast corner of the plaza. The mission was built in 1823 and has since been the home of many different establishments.

Sonoma also offers great shopping and gourmet dining. With top-of-the-line restaurants and countless wineries and cafes, this city is a treat. To dine on delicious French cuisine, try The Girl & the Fig, located at 110 West Spain Street. For a little authentic Italian, check out Della Santina’s Trattoria, which serves lamb shanks and other tasty meals at 133 East Napa Street in a stunning garden setting. You can also find a number of great wineries for enjoying wine tastings and acquiring a bottle to celebrate with at home. The area is known for its zinfandels and pinot gris.

Wine tours are highly recommended for day trips to Sonoma. You can tour Sonoma in your own vehicle, or join a tour by van, bicycle, horse or even Segway. For the ultimate California wine country experience, check out the hot air balloon tours.

Sonoma spas are wonderful places to be pampered. The Kenwood Inn and Spa, on Sonoma Highway, The Lodge at Sonoma on Broadway and The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa on Boyles Blvd all offer a full range of services. When visiting this luscious region, there is no better way to leave home behind than with a great massage or facial.

When you travel from Los Altos, California to Sonoma and see all the beautiful grape vines along the way, you may get thirsty for some wine. The wineries closest to town are B Wise Vineyards, Castle Vineyards and San Francisco Solano Mission Vineyard, which all have tasting rooms. However, of the three, only San Francisco Solano Mission offers a tour.

Just be careful with how much wine you drink. If you’re planning on driving home that night, either designate a driver or limit your intake. If you find that you enjoyed the wine too much, you can always turn your Sonoma day trip into a weekend getaway by staying at one of the areas multiple inns.
